After breakfast, drive towards Thimphu, stopping at Kharbandi Gompa, a beautiful monastery built by the Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phuntsho Choedon, in 1967. Enjoy panoramic views of Phuentsholing and the Indian plains from its peaceful gardens filled with tropical plants and flowers.

Continue the scenic journey through mountain forests, passing through Gedu and Chukha, with lunch served en route. After Chukha, follow the Wang Chu River to Chuzom, meaning “confluence,” where the Wang Chu meets the Paro Chu. From here, continue through the valley to Thimphu. Overnight at your hotel in Thimphu.

Once a quiet village in a fertile valley, Thimphu is now Bhutan’s vibrant capital. Spend the day exploring its cultural and historic highlights, beginning with the National Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the Third King and dedicated to peace and spiritual well-being. Continue to Changangkha Temple, a 12th-century temple, and Drubthob Monastery, home to the Zilukha Nunnery.

Visit the School of Arts and Crafts, where Bhutan’s traditional 13 arts are taught, followed by the National Library, the Traditional Paper Factory, and the Folk Heritage Museum, showcasing Bhutan’s rich cultural traditions.

If time permits, visit the Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal and explore the magnificent Tashichho Dzong, the “Fortress of the Glorious Religion,” which houses government offices and the central monastic body. If visiting during the weekend, explore the lively Thimphu Market, filled with fresh local produce, chilies, cheese, and traditional handicrafts. Overnight in Thimphu.

After breakfast, drive to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100 m), where clear weather offers spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks. Enjoy the beautiful countryside and, during spring, the vibrant rhododendron forests in full bloom.

Upon reaching Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan, visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, known as the “Palace of Great Happiness.” Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers, it is the winter residence of the Je Khenpo and was also the site of Bhutan’s first king’s coronation in 1907.

After lunch, take a scenic walk to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as the “Divine Madman.” Revered as a symbol of fertility, the temple attracts couples seeking blessings. Overnight in Punakha/Wangduephodrang.

After breakfast, drive to Yabesa Village and hike through scenic rice fields to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, built by Her Majesty Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. Perched on a hill above the river, the chorten features beautiful Nyingmapa paintings and offers stunning views of the Punatsangchu River.

Enjoy a picnic lunch by the riverside before returning to Thimphu, with time to explore local handicraft and souvenir shops. Continue to Paro, stopping en route at Simtokha Dzong, built in 1627 and regarded as the oldest dzong in Bhutan. Today, it houses the Institute for Language and Culture Studies. After breakfast, hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest), with the uphill journey taking approximately 1.5–2 hours to reach the viewpoint. Perched dramatically on a 900-metre cliff, the monastery is one of Bhutan’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche and his consort meditated here in the 8th century, and the sacred cave is believed to mark the origin of Buddhism in Bhutan. A teahouse is available for refreshments before returning to Paro for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, originally built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over invading Tibetans in 1644. On a clear day, enjoy magnificent views of the sacred Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m). Continue exploring the sights of Paro Valley before returning to the hotel. Overnight in Paro.
