Bhutan’s Sacred Trails: A Journey Through the Himalayas

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. The scenic drive passes through the beautiful Paro Valley and Chuzom, where the Paro and Thimphu rivers meet. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy lunch or refreshments before exploring Thimphu’s highlights.

Visit the Centenary Farmers’ Market, where locals gather to purchase fresh produce, food, and traditional handicrafts. If available, enjoy a traditional archery match at Changlimithang Stadium. Continue to Buddha Dordenma at Kuenselphodrang for panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley, followed by Tashichho Dzong, the National Memorial Chorten, and the Craft Bazaar. Dinner and overnight in Thimphu.

After breakfast, drive to Punakha via the scenic Dochula Pass at an altitude of 3,140 metres. On a clear day, enjoy magnificent views of the Himalayan mountain ranges and visit the beautiful 108 chortens and Druk Wangyal Lhakhang.

Continue to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan, which played an important role in the country’s history. En route, take a short walk through the rice fields of Metsina Village to visit Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, known for its fertility blessings.

After lunch, explore the impressive Punakha Dzong, located at the meeting point of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. In the evening, visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery and enjoy breathtaking views of the Punakha and Wangdue valleys. Dinner and overnight in Punakha.

After breakfast, explore the beautiful Punakha Valley and, during the winter months, look for the semi-nomadic Layap people who migrate south from Laya. Enjoy a picnic lunch near the Pho Chu River before visiting a traditional farmhouse in Lobesa.

Experience Bhutanese rural life through demonstrations of traditional cooking and farming. You can also participate in local recreational activities such as Khuru, archery, and Degor. Continue to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, walking through rice fields, vegetable gardens, and small villages. Located on a hilltop, the chorten offers spectacular views of the surrounding valley.

Later, visit Rinchengang Village in Wangduephodrang, where you can interact with local residents and enjoy views of Wangdue Dzong. Dinner and overnight in Punakha

After breakfast, depart Punakha and drive westwards to Paro, crossing Dochula Pass once again. Arrive in Paro in time for lunch before beginning an orientation tour of the valley.

Visit Paro Rinpung Dzong and its traditional cantilever bridge, followed by Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most beautiful temples. Continue to the historic Drukgyel Dzong, built to commemorate Bhutan’s victories over Tibetan invaders. On a clear day, enjoy views of the snow-covered peak of sacred Mount Jomolhari. After an early morning drive to Sang Choekor Buddhist College, begin your trek towards Bumdra Monastery. The trail leads through beautiful mountain landscapes and yak pastures, gradually reaching the campsite at an altitude of approximately 3,800 metres.

Along the way, visit Chhoe Tse Lhakhang and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Himalayan wilderness. After lunch, explore Bumdra Monastery, if occupied, or hike to a nearby peak at around 4,000 metres for even more spectacular mountain views. Return to camp in time for dinner and a relaxing evening beneath the stars. Overnight at Bumdra Wilderness Camp.

After breakfast, begin your descent from Bumdra through ancient pine and rhododendron forests. Follow the monks’ trail past the Zangtopelri monasteries, enjoying beautiful views of the mountains and Paro Valley along the way.

From the gardens of Zangtopelri, admire the breathtaking sight of Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on the cliffside. Continue to Tiger’s Nest, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site associated with Guru Rinpoche, who is believed to have meditated here in the 8th century.

After exploring the monastery, descend to your vehicle and continue to Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress built in 1644 to defend Bhutan’s northern route to Tibet. Dinner and overnight in Paro.
